The frigate birds are a family of seabirds and are also called frigate pelicans. It can be found breeding along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and in the Corcovado National Park.

Females are black, but have a white breast and lower neck sides, a brown band on the wings and a blue eye ring. They have long wings, tails and bills and the males have a red gular pouch that is inflated during the breeding season to attract a mate. They are also sometimes called Man of War birds or Pirate birds.

The Magnificent Frigate Bird is 100 cm long with a 215 cm wingspan. They live an estimated of 30 years. Frigate birds are seasonally monogamous. This means that males will only mate with one female each season. They are also known for nesting in colonies. Due to the fact that these guys lack the ability to take off from water, they snatch prey from the ocean surface or beach using their long, hooked bills. They have been seen catching fish, baby turtles and similar items in this way. When it comes to feeding they will also rob other seabirds, using their speed and maneuverability to outrun and harass their victims.

Both parents take turns feeding for the first three months but then only the mother feeds the young for another eight months. Male Magnificent Frigate birds inflate their throat sacs during breeding season, clattering their bills, waving their heads back and forth, quivering their wings, and calling to females. After mating has passed females lay one or two white eggs. It takes so long to rear a chick that frigate birds cannot breed every year. It is typical to see juveniles as big as their parents waiting to be fed.

They are not endangered but populations appear to be declining, due mainly to human destruction of habitat for housing and resorts, and disturbance in colonies. Some potential problems they have are: introduced predators and over-fishing.

Birdwatching 101: Choosing and Maintaining Wild Bird Feeders

Joining millions of bird lovers in creating a backyard aviary can be easy and rewarding with a little help choosing and maintaining your wild bird feeders. Begin by imagining your backyard as a birdwatching paradise and picture the desired sights and sounds that will become your goal.

Start by considering the types of birds that you wish to attract, and the ones you do not want to see. If you’re a beginner, asking neighbors or co-workers which types of birds frequent their backyards might prove useful. Understanding that your target is to attract finches or cardinals, for example, will assist you in selecting the optimal wild bird feeders and creating the right birdwatching environment.

Bird feeders are available in a number of styles. Some of these kinds include platform and ground feeders, tube, thistle, suet and wood. There are even specifically crafted feeders designed to attract a particular type of birds, such as hummingbirds. Taking the time to learn about the features of each one will increase your chance of success.

Once you have chosen the right feeders, make sure to fill them with your desired birds’ food preferences. To attract the most varieties of birds, black oil sunflower seeds are a great choice. Seasonal fruits or nuts may attract less common types of birds, especially in summer. Specific types of birds, like woodpeckers, enjoy peanuts.

Keeping to a budget with regard to bird food is easier when you choose wild bird feeders that are squirrel-resistant or unlikely to attract other furry animals. Choosing a location away from easy-to-climb landscaping or shrubby hiding places can also reduce the chance that squirrels or other creatures will gorge themselves on your newly refilled seed. If squirrels do persist, you may also try switching to thistle seed as some birdwatchers have noted that squirrels don’t like the taste.

If you’re like most birdwatchers, your desire is to attract a variety of species. Offering an array of feeders rather than one type is a way to enjoy regular backyard visits from a number of birds even throughout the seasonal changes.

When you find a spot that birds seem to frequent, setting up a bird feeding station with many feeders concentrated in one area can be exciting. Alternatively, you can position your wild bird feeders at various locations around your house and take delight in viewing the wildlife through many different windows.

Once you’ve got your yard set up, sit back and enjoy. Remember to have an identification book handy so you can enjoy your success when those exotic or unexpected species begin to arrive!

Where You Can Get Furniture on a Budget

There are plenty of people at one time or another that find themselves having to live on a tight budget and you will often find people who are first time homeowners that fall into that category as well as people who might be going through career or lifestyle changes.

Believe it or not, it is actually very easy to come by furniture that does not look like what I call early marriage, you know the hand-me-downs and the garage sale items or the culmination of what you had or your spouse had before you got married, the stuff that really clashes. It is very simple to find furniture that does not cost a fortune and can add a more coordinated, mature look to your home.

As a single parent at one time, I had a very tight budget and post divorce, you do not necessarily want to keep furniture items that remind you of the union of marriage that has now been dissolved, so I had to find ways to make my very tight budget stretch in order to get some new furniture when I moved.

I do not want to mislead you into thinking that these ideas will instantly lead you to the perfect piece of furniture you are looking for because chances are, it wont. In fact, you will probably have to do a lot of searching to find everything you want and are looking for, but its not too hard to have a good time doing this because the trips you take to look for furniture can be quite interesting and comical as well.

One of the best places to look is at garage sales. Depending on the time of year when you are shopping, you can find some great deals on some very well taken care of furniture that people just have either no room for or just do not want anymore. The last couch I found at a garage sale was well maintained and had no flaws or stains and it was very close to what I was looking for and I was able to pick it up for $25.00. Now, seriously, how can you beat $25 for a very well maintained couch? I have not been able to find that great of a deal since, I have found some great deals, but none as great as that.

Flea Markets are another good choice because there are tons of communities that have a flea market on the weekend and vendors who are looking to make you a deal to get rid of their stock are usually bountiful at a Flea Market. Just because their furniture might be cheap does not mean it is cheaply made, remember, these vendors do not have the overhead that the owners of a furniture store do and this is why they can cut you a great price break.

Thrift stores, consignment shops, scratched and dented rooms in the bigger furniture places are all great places to look for your next piece of furniture on a tight budget. Keep these tips in mind when you are looking and also, keep in mind that you might want to discuss this with family members, they might have a great piece of furniture to add to your home that they are willing to part with or have no use for.

Things To Remember When Designing a Bedroom

As we begin our discussion about room design, we should probably determine the difference between designing a space and decorating one. I will be talking about interior design, not differing decor tastes. Interior design really refers more to the functionality and physicality of the room. Decorating is what is done after the major design is laid out. In addition, it is based more on individual preferences. I would like to present you with a list of what I consider to be the most important and basic components of designing a room.

1. Probably the most important piece of our design puzzle is that the room must be proportionate to those who will use it. This is not nearly as complicated as it sounds. It just means that all the parts should match in size relative to each other. Say you are designing a room for a toddler. A king size bed in his room that measures 10 by 12 would be the definition of disproportionate. That bed does not fit in that room or with that person. It is not a matter of taste it is just true.

2. Always remember to let that sun shine in! Nothing compares to natural lighting. It makes any room come to life. When making sure that your room lets in enough sunlight, keep in mind this is one time that there is no such thing as too much!

3. Lets stop here for a little breather. Take a deep breath. Now let it out slowly. Okay, now that was not just a recess. It is our next big piece. We need air. Design your room with that in mind. Give ample space for airflow. It makes the room cooler and more crisp and fresh. If you obeyed guideline two, then your ample light-providing windows can also get that air moving. If you were unable or unwilling to have many windows installed, then do not forget that there are other options for creating airflow. Fans placed strategically can increase the flow. In addition, there are some great rooftop ventilation systems available.

4. Everyone needs their space. Design must reflect that need. You should be able to move about freely in your room. We have many doors in bedrooms. Just the entrance and a closet are basic. If you have a suite with a bathroom attached or have an outside door, it becomes more challenging to design a room that allows free movement. Just remember that a challenge does not mean it is impossible. Working within limits, can still provide enough space with some smart planning.

5. Although I did mention earlier that interior design was different than decorating, there are some points where the two can intersect. You need to remember that there are certain things that should be included or at least left room for in your design plan. This is definitely one place where you can express a bit more creativity. Simple things like light fixtures and window dressings can be included. They can add to the design and the decor at the same time.

I hope that this list gets you excited at the prospect of designing a bedroom. This is only a short overview of some of the important basics of interior design. There are many resources out there if you would like to delve further into this topic. If nothing else, I know that the next time you are visiting someones house, you will be looking to see if they read this article, too. If not, you may want to show them.

How to Dress Up Your Floors

Beautiful carpet is something that can be enjoyed for many years and there is a lot to be said for the plush fibers that allow many days and nights of resting on the floor or rolling around with your kids having a great time.

Over time though, those carpet fibers wear down and your once beautiful carpet can lose its plush feel and also the clean appearance it once had. In high traffic areas such as entry ways and exits or rooms that are used frequently such as the living area or family room can see the most of this wear and can start to look rather drab. There are also home owners who have nothing but hardwood flooring and even those hardwood floors are prone to high traffic breakdown.

One of the best ways to solve a high traffic floor problem and to be able to maintain the beautiful appearance of your floors is to purchase a few area rugs for these high traffic areas. Sometimes, we also view the floor as a decorative piece and an area rug can add an excellent accent piece to the ambiance of any room.

Selecting a rug is not just as simple as going into a store and seeing a rug that is not hideous and buy it. There are several things you should consider when you are looking to purchase an area rug and the following are some of the more popular examples of the type of rugs that you should consider when looking to purchase an area rug or two.

Depending on the room you are planning on placing the rug in and your budget, this can be a fairly easy choice as long as you take your time and look at all of the different styles that are available to you. One style would be a faded oriental rug that you can purchase at an almost any furniture store because they usually use these rugs as part of their displays as well, and there is typically nothing in a furniture store that is not for sale. If you state that you are interested in a rug, most places will sell it to you. The faded type of Oriental rug will add class to just about any room, but make sure it does not class with the room decor, for example if you have an English country room, you would not want to put an oriental rug in there because it does not stick with the theme of the room.

Another good rug would be one that has a floral design that is hooked for a more Victorian type of room or a more antique room, maybe even an old-world style of room. There are so many different floral designs to choose from and it would be difficult to not be able to at least find one that will go with just about any decor that is in this style.

Another good place for this type of rug would be in a breakfast nook or on most dining room tiles or hardwood floors. Typically, these rooms have a bland color on the floor and adding a floral area rug will give the room a very welcoming feel.

Tips on Choosing the Right Oriental Area Rug

The beauty of having an oriental area rug is having it be the centerpiece of a room so that it can add style and comfort to a room where you spend a good majority of your time at home in. There are several quality oriental area rugs that you can find that are affordable as well as make a great heirloom to pass on to your future generations. In the quest of searching for the perfect area rug, there are definitely some things you need to keep in mind and this article is going to focus on some of the more important aspects of shopping for the right oriental area rug.

One of the first things you are going to want to focus on in your search is to pay attention to the material that the rug is made with. There are generally two types of material used for making oriental rugs, one is a made from synthetic material and the other is made from natural material. The thing you need to keep in mind most when choosing the rug and the material it is made with is to make sure that where you intend to put the rug plays a big factor on which type of rug is going to be best. If you are buying the oriental area rug for a high traffic area, you are going to want to spend a little more and invest in the ones made with natural fibers because they are more equipped to handle the high traffic.

The next thing you want to look at is the KPSI factor. KPSI stands for knots per square inch and the higher the knots, the better quality of rug you are looking at. Additionally, there are a lot of people who own oriental rugs that are always on the look-out for new rugs and these people are very well versed in what it takes to search for that perfect rug and they also will tell you that having a handmade rug versus a machine made rug is the best kind to find. It is easy to tell whether or not you are looking at a handmade rug because you will find tiny flaws in the overall character of the rug, whereas a machine is programmed to design the rug with zero flaws.

Of course this is all subject to you and your preference and personal style. There are some people that would rather have a rug that has no flaws in it, regardless of how small the flaw might be.

Lastly, you want to make sure that the oriental area rug you choose is authentic. Once again, another step that is easy because each authentic rug will come with a certificate of authenticity that will contain details on it such as the size, the origin of the rug, how old it is, the materials it is made with and the KPSI. It is important to also keep that certificate for insurance purposes because an investment like this is not going to be cheap and should something happen to your rug, you will want to have the peace of mind that it can be replaced.

Fashion Tips for Home Decor

Over the years I have become keenly aware at how a persons individual style for fashion does not always spill over into the way they decorate their homes. I have met several people in my lifetime that I like to refer to as Fashionistas who have a great style for fashion and are always up “to-date on the latest trends and they usually have to have an excellent job or career to go along with those fashionable tastes. With that said, those same people have invited me over for a dinner or just to visit and I walk into their homes and I am completely shocked at the lack of attention they give their decor or the out-dated way they have decided to decorate.

I am the last person who will judge a person based by what they wear or what their home looks like, so I do not want you to misunderstand what I am saying when I make that previous statement. It just comes as a shock when you see someone who is so into fashion neglect the fashion of their own home. There are also others who think they have a flair for home decor but really do not have the first clue as to some of the dos and do nots of home decor.

This article will focus on some of the fashion rules that you should follow when choosing the style your home is going to present to the people who live there and to your guests. I would have to say that first rule of home fashion is to make sure that you purchase at least one piece of furniture that is going to stand the test of time, such as your dining room table, an oriental rug or area rug or something antique like and armoire. Area rugs specifically will add just the right touch to any room without overwhelming the room with a cluttered feel and an area rug is also a great accent for any room that has a high traffic area to be able to protect the flooring underneath.

Instead of keeping every room in a neutral color, you need to spice things up a bit and add some brilliant colors to certain rooms of the home such as a bedroom or breakfast nook. This will take away the constant need to redecorate or add too much clutter to a room to spice it up when you get bored with it. Taking the time to initially add bright color to a room will keep you satisfied for a very long time.

Using the right type of lighting in each room is going to make a major difference in the feel of your home. If you have a large living area, for example, using two floor lamps or two end table lamps to light the entire room is not going to give the proper light, nor will it do the room justice. Instead you should opt for track lighting in large rooms or even recessed lighting.

When you are ready to get caught up on fashion for your home and are ready to start to decorate or re-decorate, do some online research or pick up a home decor magazine and you will be sure to find some great ideas and even some ideas that with a little bit of your own imagination, you can expand on.

How to Make Your Own Hand Braided Rug

Rugs have been used for many centuries to accent a room or provide a place for a pet to call home, or even to relieve the stress that furniture can put on carpet or bare flooring. Making your own rug is not only rewarding because it is something you make with your own hands, but it is rewarding because it can dress up just about any room and also, provided you follow instructions and your craftsmanship is impeccable, can be passed down to other generations as well as making a great gift.

The first thing you will need to do is take a trip to the fabric store to choose the colors of fabric and style that you want. You will need to choose a very sturdy fabric because remember, this is an area rug or a rug that might have a lot of traffic on it and you do not want it to fall apart in a year. Fabrics that are made of strong material such as denim or very strong cotton are both good choices. Keep the decor of the room in mind too. You do not want to make a purple and pink rug for a room that has primarily neutral colors in it so stick with the color of the room, but you can be creative in design.

The next thing you will want to do is make sure that you purchase enough material to create the size of rug you want. Most braided rugs are typically either 2×3 Ft. or 3×5 ft. and you can shape them either oval or round depending on your needs. Obviously, there are rugs that are quite a bit larger than this, but for making your first rug, I recommend choosing one just this size to start out with so that you can get a feel for what it will take to create a braided area rug much larger. So with that said, you will need to purchase enough material to cut strips of fabric at least twice that amount because you will be braiding and coiling this rug, it is better to have too much than not enough.

When you have your material ready to go, you will want to cut 3 strips of each fabric into long strips that are approximately 3 inches wide. If you are going for the alternating color look, then make sure that you have the colors in a row the way you want them to appear in the coil. For example, if you are doing a red, white and blue rug, it is best to put the stripes in a red, white and blue order instead of red, blue and white. You will achieve a more flow-like look by doing this.

Next, you will want to sew the ends of each strand together at one end and you can refer to that end as the top of your braid and then once you have sewn them together, you can start braiding until you reach the end. Once you reach the end, you will want to sew that end together to complete the braid.

The final step is going to be coiling and sewing the coil to finish the area rug. You will coil the braid just like a snake would coil and make sure that you start from one end of the braid and place the color you want visible in the center of the rug up.

You will need to hand stitch the inside of the coil with nylon thread because this will be the strongest holding thread. Each time you coil the braid around to the spot where you made your first hand stitch, you will want to make another hand stitch in the same spot for each coil around.

When you reach the end of your coil, you will tuck in the ends between the folds of the previous coils and sew that down firmly. Now you are ready to check the rug for any frays or loose threads and trim them off or sew them down.

You project is complete and you now have a new accent piece to place in any room you choose!

Want to Learn How to Attract Hummingbirds to Your Backyard?

Even if you live in the middle of a town or a city, you can attract hummingbirds to your garden. Some simple steps and adjustments in your garden will make it more hummingbird friendly and you will be rewarded with their arrival year after year alongwith their young ones.

Setting up hummingbird feeders is a great way to attract them. The feeders should be filled with artificial sugar water solution made at home. Some red flowers can be hanged on a basket or planted near the feeders. This will make it easier for the birds to find the feeders, as they will be attracted to the red flowers. It should be remembered that these birds only rely on sites to find their food source as they do not have any sense of smell.

The hummingbirds are attracted to the red color, so any feeder having red on it will attract the birds. If your feeder doesn’t have the red color, an artificial red flower can be tied to the feeder and stay away from using the red food coloring in the sugar water which is harmful to them. You must also remember that the hummingbirds are very territorial. Male hummers may show their dominance by hovering or chasing away the other hummers from their feeders. So you can add other hummingbird feeders to your garden and thereby attract more of these birds.

If you notice molds on your feeder, you have to scrub them out with a bottle brush. If you are unable to reach them with the brush, adding some sand and water and shaking the feeder will remove these molds. You should never try to clean the feeders with harsh detergent or soaps as the birds do not like any traces of soap left in the feeder. Hot water should be used to rinse out the feeder each time the nectar is changed. A little amount of white vinegar can also be used with the water for rinsing.

Using red colored hummingbird feeders in your garden will attract more of these birds. An artificial red flower or band can be tied to the feeder if you feel the feeder doesn’t have enough red in it. But, using of red food colors in the nectar solution should be avoided as they are found to be harmful to the birds. Sometimes, the male hummingbirds try to exert their dominance and drive away the other hummers if you have fewer feeders in your garden. You can prevent this by adding several other feeders around the garden and bring more hummingbirds to your garden.

The feeder of the hummingbirds can be invaded by insects like bees and ants, driving away the birds. To avoid this you can use the feeders with built-in bee guards and use moats or nectar protectors to control ant invasion. When the moats are attached above the feeders filled with water, they block the ant’s pathway.

Insects like ants and bees may invade your garden and feeders and drive away the hummingbirds. You have to use the feeders with built-in bee guards and attach moats or nectar protectors on the feeders to control their invasion. These steps will ensure that your garden continues attracting the hummingbirds.
