Now we will discuss the mounting of your scope.

The only thing more important than a telescopic scope that works with a deer hunting rifle, the chosen hunting environment, and the shooting style of the hunter, is the actual rifle itself. The mounting of your scope is a very important factor many hunters don’t give enough attention.

Scope Mounting

The place where many mistakes are made is in the scope mount. Your scope, and therefore your deer hunting rifle, will wind up being absolutely useless to you in the field if the mounting is not a good quality. Unfortunately, the problem usually does not present itself until you are actually firing and you could wind up missing entirely, or only wounding the animal. When the mounting rings and bases are not installed properly you will be left with wasted rounds, missed opportunities and a lot of frustration.

This can actually destroy your scope, damage your rifle receivers and bolts, and become a danger to the person shooting the rifle. It is definitely a good idea to have a gunsmith install these vital elements between you gun and scope. Plus, the minimal charge you will have to pay is well worth the peace of mind it will afford you. If you do it yourself, you will end up spending just as much, if not more, as you waste ammo trying to sight in your scope. Plus, the sighting in process can be more like work than it is fun. Isn’t shooting supposed to be a fun and pleasurable experience.

In order to have the ideal mounting system on your gun, you need to have your scope secured to your rifle in a way that is as low as it can be and still be comfortable and that uses the least number of parts. The more parts you have to use, the more likely something will go wrong with the system. While solid steel mounts are the strongest made, the aluminum ones will work perfectly well. You need to know that the see through rings are known to be weak and that while carrying your rifle or bumping it you may change how your scope is sited in. In most hunting situations, using the minimum power on your scope should prevent you from having to rely on the iron sights on your gun anyway.

Buying the proper scope to fit your hunting locale and type of shooting is key to making successful shots. Get this right and you will make your hunts more fulfilling.
