If you love to fish, then you will truly enjoy carp fishing in France. France offers many small lakes that have very large carp for you to enjoy. Most of these fishing resorts have catch and release policies, so those large carp that you catch this year will only be larger next year.

Since these lakes are privately owned, they also limit the number of anglers at the lake at any one time. While you have to pay for the privilege of fishing the private lakes, you can always find a prime fishing spot since there may only be three to seven other anglers at the lake during the week when you visit. A group of four to eight serious fisher persons can have an entire lake to their party.

Carp are a very large fish. It is not uncommon to catch carp that weigh forty to fifty pounds in these private lakes. In some cases, carp have grown to over one hundred pounds. Since you will be fishing catch and release, you will want to be sure that you bring a camera.

In addition, you will want to bring with you the following equipment. If traveling presents a problem in bringing the equipment, many of the lakes will have rental equipment available.

You will need a medium action rod. It needs to be a minimum of six feet long. If you choose a longer rod, it will be easier to land the larger fish.

For a reel, you will need to choose either a spin casting reel or a spinning reel that has a good drag. The reel needs to hold 120 yards or more of 12 pound test fishing line.

For hooks, choose anything from a size 2 to a size 6 hook. Most of the private lakes require barbless hooks for catch and release and may specify the exact size and type of hook you can use. Be sure to consult the information in your packet if you have questions about hooks.

Carp are sensitive to any resistance on the bait that they pick up. They will drop it in a second if they feel resistance. Therefore, corks are not used and weights should be small split shot or slip sinkers. This will encourage the fish to take your bait.

Without corks, you will need to watch your line closely to know when a fish has took the bait. Keep your reel open and watch the line or use a fish indicator made of Styrofoam that will pop off the line when the fish pulls on it.
